Astronomy in Florence: from the "Specola" to the Observatory at Arcetri

Florence, Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza,
from March 2008

Organised in collaboration with the University of Florence, Department of Astronomy, and the Arcetri Astrophysics Observatory, Astronomy in Florence is a temporary exhibit that is ideally linked to the exhibit Galileo’s Telescope. Some of the instruments that are part of the collections of the IMSS and recently restored by Giampaolo Curioni and Andrea Rabbi are on display in three compact sections. The exhibit delineates a brief history of Florentine astronomy between Palazzo Torrigiani, the seat of the grand-ducal “Specola” and the hill of Arcetri, the seat of the Observatory. The ups and downs of the two institutions, is accompanied by the history of a few of the individuals who characterised Florentine astronomy, among which include; Felice Fontana, Giovanni Battista Amici, Giovanni Battista Donati, Antonio and Giorgio Abetti. The exhibit, curated by Paolo del Santo, Massimo Mazzoni and Giorgio Strano, will remain open until the conclusion of the renovation work of the IMSS in autumn of 2009.
