Vitrum Digital Library

The digital Library Vitrum presents a selection of fundamental works on the history of glass. Realized with the intention of making entirely available for consultation on the Web, for the first time, the earliest treatises on the processing of glass published in modern times, as well as some fundamental studies on the history of glass, Vitrum represents a small digital encyclopedia, which illustrates the scientific and technological revolution that accompanied the use of glass starting from Antiquity. To this selection has been added a digital reproduction of the famous work by Tommaso Piroli, Antichità di Ercolano, Rome, 1789- 1807, a fascinating description of the places of origin of most of the glasswork displayed.

Digital acquisition of the documents has been effected in color 400 DPI 24-bit (TIFF, jpeg2000 or PNG). For on-line consultation there is a resolution of 150 DPI jpg 80% (enlargement 600 pixels, larger side, jpg 80%) while for input of the meta data, which allow consultation of texts through a structured index, the MAG format has been utilized.
