Inauguration of Internet Cultural Portal

March 22, 2005 was the inauguration date of the Internet Cultural Portal, realized as part of the La Biblioteca Digitale Italiana ed il Network Turistico Culturale ("The Italian Digital Library and Cultural Tourism Network", BDI&NTC), a project of the Direzione Generale per i Beni Librari e gli Istituti Culturali del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali (MiBAC).

The occasion was honored by the presence of: Lucio Stanca, Minister of Innovation and Technology, Giuliano Urbani, Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities, Luciano Scala, General Director of Libraries and Cultural Institutes, Tullio Gregory, President of the Italian Digital Library Steering Committee, Paolo Galluzzi, Director of the Florence Institute and Museum of the History of Science, and Amedeo Quondam, President of the Intervarsity Telematic Italian Library Center.

The BDI&NTC project, of considerable national interest and approved in March of 2003 by the Board of the Ministers of Society and Information, was initiated in February of 2004 and today has accomplished the realization of the Internet Cultural Portal, through the scientific coordination of the Central Institute for a Collective Italian Libraries Catalogue of the MiBAC, access point to the databases of the National Library Services (SBN) and the collaboration of several expert institutions - the Institute and Museum of the History of Science of Florence, the Department of Performance and Italian Studies of the Università “La Sapienza” in Rome and the Casa della Musica of the City of Parma.

In particular Internet Culturale offers, through the mediation of the public institutions:

  • freccia an up-to-date version of the SBN collective catalogue, which allows for integrated queries of the 15 million bibliographic records present in the central and local catalogues of the participating libraries and institutions;
     
  • freccia services for the online access to digitalized objects, through content searches and digital collections;
     
  • freccia a network of services related to the national cultural heritage with information on events, news, activities, public and private institutions pertinent to the world of archives, libraries, and culture in general;
     
  • freccia a series of digital exhibitions dedicated to important Italian writers and the presentation of works of the poets of the 1900s, which trace a true cultural geographical map;
     
  • freccia a wealth of touristic-cultural information organized in virtual itineraries, information on cultural heritage sites and 3D visits;
     
  • freccia a knowledge management system organized by thematic areas relating to Literary Culture, Scientific Culture, and Musical Culture (available beginning in April, 2005).
