Viviani's Noteon Manetti, the first owner of Codex 72

The following note by Viviani is found in the Ms. Gal. 318, folio 710r,in the Biblioteca Nazionale in Florence. See also FAVARO1886, pp. 17-18:

"Of Sig. Galileo's unpublished works and writings still in manuscriptform, there was none in Florence who owned more of them than Sig. BraccioManetti. In addition to his own, he inherited all those possessed by Niccolo'Aggiunti, and then those of Dino Peri, plus many others [owned by]Pieralli, Professor at the Sapienza, and Doctor Puccianti, which are agreat many. In particular, he owned the following works of Sig. Galileo:[...]

• A discourse on the Bisenzio river.
• The entire dispute between Sig. Galileo and Nozzolini concerning theestimation of a horse.
• Treatise on Mechanics etc.
• Various things regarding the banned Dialogue."

"De i discorsi e Compositioni manuscritte, e non stampate del Sig.rGalileo non era in Firenze chi ne avesse maggior quantita' che il Sig.rBraccio Manetti, il quale, oltre alle proprie eredito' tutte quelle cheaveva Niccolo' Aggiunti, e dopo quelle di Dino Peri e molte ancora delPieralli Dottor di Sapienza e del Dottor Puccianti, che sono moltissime,aveva particolarmente del Sig.r Galilei: [...]

• Un discorso sopra il fiume Bisenzio
• Tutta la disputa tra il Sig. Galileo et il Nozzolini circa la stimad'un cavallo.
• Trattato di Meccaniche etc.
• Varie cose attenenti al Dialogo proibito."

Although the note does not explicitly mention the fragments on the Discorsi,all the other items are the same as in Nelli's catalogue, entered in anidentical order, see also the comparisonwith Nelli's list. It is therefore very likely that also the notes on motionand mechanics of Codex 72 were in the possession of Braccio Manetti, seethe historyof the codex in the 17th century.
