Folio Numeration

The entire codex consists, according to the Procissi catalogue, of 241 folios, with 201 of them numbered in pencilfrom 1 to 196; these are the numbers used in the listof folio pages. Between the second folio carryingthe number 27 and folio 28 a fascicule has been inserted whose 40 pagesare numbered separately. See PROCISSI1959, p. 151.

Folio number 40 has been repeated twice and folio numbers27, 44, and 89 have been repeated once. Here they are distinguished by letters added to the folio numbers.

In one case (folios 182a and 182b) identical pencil numbers of two different pages have been already distinguished by additional letters.

Some folio pages, e.g. 63r, carry a number in the right upper corner (in this case a "3") that may have been written by Galileo himself. There are also some folios carrying an attached piece of paper (e.g. folio 130) apparently serving as a book mark (in this case with the number 38).

To some folios cut pieces of paper had been attached or glued which now have been detached (folios 86, 90, 138, and 179). With one exception (folio 90) these pieces of paper are represented here by separate scans and identified by adding letters to the number of the folio page. In the case of folio 90, the attached piece carries already a designation by a letter; in this case, the attached piece is not represented by a separate scan in order to preserve the continuity of the text between the folio and its attached piece.

The recent unbinding of the manuscript has revealed that several folios are parts of folded sheets carrying two consecutive numbers. With one exception (folios 41 and 42) these numbers have been kept representing separate digital images. The physical connection of these folios has, however, been indicated by a comments at the overview level and by a thumbnail representation of the entire sheets on the survey pages.
