Main Aspects and Changes in the New OPAC

Activated in July 2004, the library's new OPAC system follows the adoption of Amicus as the new data input and management software.

Here are the principal characteristics and innovations of the new OPAC:

  • • The OPAC is now available in two versions: English and Italian.

  • The data are updated in real time and are therefore immediately available and searchable (data recovery through full-text and subject searches is instead updated nightly, therefore the data can be recovered through the aforementioned keys the day after input).

  • The order records are now available: when consulting the full database (IMSS Common Bibliographic Database), if the documented searched for is on order, the brief bibliographic record appears with the message "Document on order" (in the extended view).

  • • In addition to links to the title page and illustrations, a link to the complete digital text is now also present and visible in the database (by clicking on the specific icon in the extended view). It is also possible (through the advanced search) to limit the search to records with digital text available.

  • • As the database is composed of various types of records, from catalogue cards to ‘simple’ bibliographic notes, library holdings are indicated to the user with the message "Document OWNED by the library" to which is added the specification that for the shelfmark of articles it is necessary to refer to the shelfmark of the host monograph or periodical (in the extended view).

  • • The search by subject keywords and through the subject catalogue (selecting "Subject" from the "Search" drop-down menu) is now also available in English.

  • • It is now possible to consult, through the library OPAC, catalogues of other libraries (see "Other Databases" page), either separately or in groups.

  • • Shortly it will be possible to consult the authority files as well: Name, Institute and Subject (see "Other Databases" page).
